Why can’t a carpet machine wash an Oriental rug?

Wall-to-wall carpet is glued down, synthetic, and forgiving. A hand-knotted rug is none of those things.

Under the pile of a wool or Oriental rug sits a foundation of cotton or wool that quietly collects years of grit — pounds of it. A truck-mount wand passing over the surface leaves that grit exactly where it is, grinding away at the knots every time someone walks across the room.

Dyes are the other problem. Many older and hand-dyed rugs will bleed if they’re hit with the wrong chemistry or left wet too long. In Hollywood’s humidity, “left wet too long” happens fast.

Why do we look at your rug before we name a price?

Because two rugs the same size can need completely different work.

A machine-made synthetic and a hand-knotted wool Persian might measure identically — and one needs triple the labor of the other. Pet contamination, unstable dyes, worn fringe, and old repairs all change what the wash involves.

A number quoted over the phone, sight unseen, is a guess. And a guess either overcharges you or gets “adjusted” upward at your door.

After inspection you get one clear price, in writing, before any work begins. If some of the work isn’t worth paying for, we say so.
